Each uses a start timestamp, an end timestamp, and a direct beat-interval count. The result reports early BPM, late BPM, absolute change, relative change, and numerical direction.

“Drift” here is descriptive shorthand, not a verdict about ability, intent, or quality. A later rate can be higher because of deliberate acceleration, crowd energy, editing, a different arrangement, or a counting choice. The tool does not hear the recording and cannot assign a cause.

Keep the pulse and method consistent

Choose the same pulse unit in both sections. If the early window follows quarter notes and the late window follows eighth notes, the apparent change may be near 100 percent even when the underlying tempo is stable. Use direct beat intervals for both inputs; there is no boundaries selector on this route, so convert inclusive boundary marks by subtracting one before entry.

Prefer windows of similar length and comparable musical texture. An early verse with clear drums and a late rubato outro may answer a real section-change question, but it is not a controlled stability check. Preserve that context outside the numeric result.

Worked early and late windows

Mark an early window from 01:00 to 01:20 with 40 beat intervals. Its duration is 20 seconds, so early BPM is 60 × 40 ÷ 20 = 120. Mark a later window from 08:00 to 08:20 with 41 intervals. Late BPM is 60 × 41 ÷ 20 = 123.

Signed difference is 123 − 120 = +3 BPM. Absolute difference is 3 BPM. Relative difference uses the early value as its reference: 3 ÷ 120 × 100 = 2.5 percent. The direction message may say “late window is 3 BPM higher,” but it must not say “the performer rushed” or “tempo quality declined.”

If the windows are reversed numerically—early 123 and late 120—the absolute difference remains 3, while direction becomes lower and relative difference becomes 3 ÷ 123 × 100, approximately 2.44 percent. Stating the denominator makes the percentage interpretable.

Why chronology is enforced

The late start must occur after the early window ends. This keeps the record’s labels meaningful and prevents two overlapping observations from masquerading as a beginning-to-end comparison. The rule does not prove that the windows represent the same section or performance conditions; it simply establishes order on the content timeline.

For adjacent or overlapping estimates without chronological meaning, use the general observation comparator. It accepts prepared rates and reports median and range. This drift page focuses on one directional pair and therefore uses the early reading as the percentage baseline.

Timestamp precision and window length

Whole-second content displays can introduce meaningful variation in short windows. One interval or one second matters more across five seconds than across twenty. A longer span can reduce proportional boundary error, provided the passage remains coherent. Calculate both windows with similar discipline rather than adding decimals to one uncertain endpoint.

Live recordings often contain genuine small changes. A descriptive result becomes stronger when a third independent window confirms a pattern, but this page deliberately stays with two. Additional prepared readings belong in the comparator. Do not average early and late results and call the average the “correct tempo” without a clear purpose.

Preserve both substituted formulas when sharing the result. A difference with no window evidence cannot be rechecked.

Scope limitations and local handling

The tool does not retrieve a YouTube URL, inspect audio or video, read a player’s current time, identify beats, access captions, use a microphone, call an API, search a song library, or store a timeline history. The viewer transcribes all six values. The page performs subtraction, division, and percentage arithmetic locally.

It also does not ask for playback speed. Content timestamps describe source time. If the rates came from wall-time observation at altered speed, correct them to source time before using a chronological comparison.
