Start with a passage you can defend

This YouTube BPM finder is a manual observation worksheet. Keep the video in another tab and choose a section where the pulse is audible or visually countable. Enter the first content timestamp, the last content timestamp, and the count that lies between them. The page never listens to the video. Your marked window is the evidence.

Longer windows usually reduce the influence of one late click or uncertain boundary, but they should not cross a tempo change. A clean sixteen- or thirty-two-beat span can be more useful than a longer span that includes a stop, pickup, breakdown, or edit. The label field can hold a neutral note such as “verse 2, clean drums.” Do not put a person’s name, private URL, account identifier, or confidential project title there because the field is unnecessary for the math.

Boundaries and intervals are different counts

Tempo measures repeated intervals. If the first marked beat is boundary one and the final marked beat is boundary thirty-three, there are thirty-two intervals between them. Select “Beat boundaries” and enter 33; the worksheet subtracts one. If you directly counted the spaces or pulses completed after the first marker, select “Beat intervals” and enter 32. The formula must display the converted interval count so an off-by-one assumption cannot hide.

Do not count a boundary merely because the window begins at an arbitrary time. Place the first timestamp on a pulse you can identify, then make the last timestamp land on another occurrence of the same pulse role when possible. In four-beat meter, downbeat to downbeat across eight full bars contains 32 beat intervals even though 33 downbeat-inclusive beat markers can be named along the span.

How playback speed is represented

YouTube’s content counter refers to positions in the source timeline. At 1.5×, a thirty-second difference between two displayed positions still covers thirty source seconds, although the viewer experiences it in twenty seconds of wall time. The worksheet records the chosen speed and shows both perspectives.

Let D be end timestamp minus start timestamp in source seconds, I the count of beat intervals, and S the playback-speed factor. Source BPM equals 60 × I ÷ D. Implied wall time equals D ÷ S. Observed playback BPM equals source BPM × S. Dividing observed playback BPM by S returns the source-time BPM. This paired display avoids changing the musical record merely because the viewer slowed a difficult passage.

For example, mark 07:14 through 07:38, choose Beat boundaries, enter 49, and record 0.75×. The 49 boundaries yield 48 intervals across 24 source seconds. Source BPM is 60 × 48 ÷ 24 = 120. The slowed passage lasts an implied 32 wall seconds and is experienced at 90 BPM. Correcting 90 ÷ 0.75 returns 120. The half and double candidates are 60 and 240 BPM.

Meter is context, not a detected answer

The optional meter field records beats per bar only when the observer already has a reason to use it. Entering 4 can help describe that 48 beat intervals span twelve bars. It does not prove 4/4, identify the downbeat, or rule out a compound interpretation. Leave meter blank when uncertain. The result card must say “not recorded” rather than guessing.

Half and double candidates serve the same cautious purpose. A 120 result could coexist with a musically useful 60 pulse or a 240 subdivision. Choose among them by listening to accents, phrase lengths, and movement, not by treating the largest or middle number as automatically correct.

Read the success card before copying it

A valid card includes the normalized timestamps, source duration, implied wall duration, converted interval count, chosen convention, speed, observed rate, corrected source-time rate, candidates, and optional context. Check that the interval total matches the span you intended. If the result seems implausible, review the boundary choice before changing numbers to force a familiar tempo.

The clipboard action copies a plain-text record. It does not copy video content or fetch a title. A useful card might read “window 07:14–07:38; 49 boundaries = 48 intervals; speed 0.75×; observed 90 BPM; source 120 BPM; candidates 60/120/240; label verse window.” Another observer can reproduce that method without receiving the video through this site.

Honest limitations

The calculation cannot hear accents, separate drums from dance subdivisions, identify meter, detect tempo drift, or decide whether a section represents the whole recording. Timestamp precision and human counting set the practical limit. Rounded player displays may introduce a small boundary error, especially in very short windows. Repeat the observation over a longer clean span when precision matters.

No URL field or import control exists. The browser does not call the YouTube API, load thumbnails, inspect captions, download media, analyze audio, activate a microphone, search a song catalog, or save a history. Closing or resetting the page ends the local worksheet state.

Frequently asked questions

Which timestamp formats work?

Use MM:SS or HH:MM:SS. Each colon seconds field must be 00–59, and the middle minutes field in HH:MM:SS must also be 00–59.

Should I enter beats or boundaries?

Either is accepted, but select the matching convention. Boundaries include both endpoints; intervals count the spaces between them.

Why does slowing the video not lower source BPM?

Slowing changes experienced playback rate and wall time. The source timeline and recorded performance remain unchanged.

Can the worksheet name the song or meter?

No. It uses only the values you enter and makes no media or catalog inference.

## Calculate, then repeat elsewhere

Enter one well-defined window and copy the card. Next, choose a second passage that does not overlap the first and compare the prepared source-time readings. Agreement is more informative when each number retains its timestamps and count convention.
