Compare prepared observations, not raw media
The YouTube BPM observation comparator begins after measurement. Enter two, three, or four BPM readings that were prepared elsewhere from distinct windows. The page sorts them, reports their median and range, and shows how far each value sits from the median. It never opens a video or tries to recreate the observations.
Each input should refer to the same pulse unit and time basis. Do not mix a 60 BPM half-time interpretation with a 120 BPM beat-level result unless the comparison is specifically meant to expose that mismatch. Do not mix observed playback rates with corrected source-time rates. A useful set might contain three source-time readings from the verse, chorus, and later verse, all counted at the same pulse level.
Why median and range answer different questions
Range is maximum minus minimum. It shows the full spread but can be dominated by one outlying observation. Median is the middle reading after sorting, or the average of the middle pair when the count is even. It describes the center without moving as strongly toward an extreme. Mean is also shown for context, but no statistic is labeled “true BPM.”
With two readings, 119.5 and 120.5, the median and mean are both 120, and the range is 1 BPM. With three readings, 119.5, 120, and 123.5, the median is 120, the mean is 121, and the range is 4. The higher third value moves the mean while leaving the median at the central observation.
Absolute deviation from the median is reported for each input. In the three-value example, deviations are 0.5, 0, and 3.5 BPM. These numbers help identify which card deserves a boundary review. They do not establish that the distant card is wrong; it may describe a section with genuinely different tempo.
Worked four-window comparison
Enter 118.8, 119.4, 120.2, and 122.0. Sorted order remains the same. Minimum is 118.8, maximum is 122.0, and range is 3.2 BPM. Because four values form an even set, median is the average of 119.4 and 120.2, which equals 119.8. Mean is 120.1.
The absolute distances from 119.8 are 1.0, 0.4, 0.4, and 2.2. A viewer might revisit the fourth card’s timestamps and count convention. If the fourth window occurs during a live ending, its higher rate may be a descriptive part of the performance rather than a mistake.
The copied comparison should retain the ordered values and formulas. It should not invent section labels because this tool accepts no labels. Attach the original observation cards separately when context matters.
Decimal agreement deserves restraint. If the prepared cards were derived from whole-second timestamps, a comparator output such as 119.83 should not be presented as newly precise evidence. Keep the displayed inputs, round the summary consistently, and use the spread to decide what to recheck. Statistical arithmetic can retain decimals for calculation while the editorial note acknowledges the measurement resolution.
Prepare comparable inputs before using statistics
First correct any altered-playback observation to source time. Second, resolve obvious half/double mismatches by documenting the pulse being compared. Third, ensure each card reports the same count convention or at least a correctly converted interval total. Fourth, prefer independent windows rather than several nearly identical boundaries around one moment.
Statistics cannot repair inconsistent evidence. Comparing 90 BPM observed at 0.75× with 120 source BPM creates artificial agreement only after correcting 90 ÷ 0.75 to 120. Comparing a 120 quarter-note pulse with a 240 eighth-note subdivision creates an artificial range. The input preparation belongs to the observer.
What the page refuses to conclude
The comparator does not assign confidence, accuracy, quality, stability, or performer skill. A small range can result from several consistently misplaced boundaries. A large range can result from intentional accelerando. Median is not an automated consensus truth. It is a descriptive center for the values entered.
No URL, timestamp, media file, microphone stream, or platform account is accepted. The page does not call the YouTube API, parse audio, detect tempo, search a catalog, or save comparison history. Values and calculations remain in the active browser page until reset or closure.
