Treat displayed positions as source-time coordinates
To use YouTube timestamps for BPM, treat the start and end as coordinates on the video’s content timeline. The displayed counter identifies where the source material is, not how long the viewer’s wall clock has run at a chosen speed. Subtracting those positions gives source seconds for the selected passage.
Nothing needs to be imported. Watch separately and type MM:SS or HH:MM:SS into the local page. The site does not read the player, URL, video, or account.
Convert each format consistently
For MM:SS, total seconds equal minutes × 60 + seconds. Thus 12:07 becomes 727 seconds. For HH:MM:SS, total seconds equal hours × 3,600 + minutes × 60 + seconds. Thus 1:02:07 becomes 3,727 seconds.
Colon seconds must be 00–59. In a three-part timestamp, the middle minutes field must also be 00–59. A value such as 12:75 is rejected instead of silently normalized, because it may be a transcription error. Rewrite it deliberately as 13:15 if that is what the display meant.
End minus start must be positive. If start is 12:07 and end is 12:27, the duration is 747 − 727 = 20 seconds. If an hour boundary is crossed, the same conversion prevents confusion: 59:50 to 1:00:10 is also twenty seconds when the latter is entered as 1:00:10.
Place coordinates on musical boundaries
An arithmetic window can begin anywhere, but a reproducible musical window begins on a recurring pulse. Identify a downbeat or other reference event, record its content position, count intervals, and end on the equivalent event later. Avoid choosing timestamps merely because they are round numbers.
Because the visible counter may show whole seconds while a beat occurs between increments, endpoint placement has finite precision. A ten-second window can shift significantly if either boundary is uncertain by part of a second. A longer clean window reduces the proportional influence, provided it does not cross a tempo or structural change.
Worked hour-boundary example
Suppose a long performance window begins at 59:50 and ends at 1:00:10. Convert the start to 3,590 seconds and the end to 3,610 seconds. The difference is 20 seconds. Count 41 inclusive beat boundaries, which convert to 40 intervals. BPM equals 60 × 40 ÷ 20 = 120.
Document the substituted formula: “(3,610 − 3,590) = 20 seconds; 41 boundaries − 1 = 40 intervals; 60 × 40 ÷ 20 = 120 BPM.” This is much safer than sharing only the final number.
If the player was at 1.5×, the twenty source seconds pass in about 13.33 wall seconds and are experienced at 180 BPM. The source-timestamp answer remains 120. Do not divide 120 by 1.5; that would correct a value that was already derived from source time.
Separate timestamps from share links
A timestamp can also appear inside a share URL, but this method does not need the URL. Read the visible content position and transcribe it. A link may expose a video identifier, account context, referrer, or private material that the arithmetic does not require. Keeping only numeric coordinates supports the site’s data-minimizing boundary.
The calculator cannot verify that 12:07 refers to one video and 12:27 to the same video. It assumes the user transcribed a coherent window. It cannot see later edits that move a section or change duration. Add a review date to an observation card if the record may be revisited.
Where timestamp arithmetic stops
Timestamps reveal elapsed source time, not beats. The observer still chooses a pulse and counts intervals. They do not identify meter, downbeat, swing, halftime, or a performance’s intended tempo. A silent passage can have perfectly valid coordinates and no useful pulse estimate.
For a loop described in whole bars, use the loop estimator. For an already observed wall-time rate at altered speed, use the speed corrector. For two or more prepared readings, use a comparison route. Keeping these questions separate makes each formula reviewable.
Frequently asked questions
Can I enter 75:00?
Yes as MM:SS, meaning seventy-five minutes. For clarity around hours, 1:15:00 is also accepted where the interface normalizes it.
Does 1.5× change the displayed content difference?
No. It changes wall time and experienced rate, while the content coordinates still bound the same source passage.
Should I copy a share URL with a time parameter?
No. Only numeric timestamps are required. The site has no URL field or retrieval feature.
What if a beat falls between displayed seconds?
Use a longer stable window and repeat a second measurement. Do not imply subsecond precision that was not observed.
Transcribe start and end positions, convert them consistently, and preserve the source-second subtraction beside the interval formula. That record makes both timing and counting assumptions visible.
